Based in Salt Lake City, John brings to the table a breadth of experience across a wide scope of the snow and avalanche world. With a life-long passion for skiing, climbing, and all things spatially influenced by the natural environment, John headed west to study Geography at the University of Utah- a ruse for the access to the legendary skiing nearby. Shortly after graduation, work as a ski patroller at nearby Solitude ensued, which quickly solidified his path for a life in the industry.
John has worked as a cat, heli and human-powered ski guiding since 2005, predominantly in Utah, Alaska and New Zealand. Today, John owns and operates a small Utah-based guide service called Backcountry Pros and is certified as both an AMGA Ski Guide and Rock Guide. With a desire to explore, and an apparent passion for pain, John also became the first person to ski tour the full length of the Wasatch Range, solo, in the spring of 2016.
Often using his personal experiences to highlight the real-world application of teaching points, John’s passion for the mountains, snow and skiing is readily apparent. John has worked for AAI since 2016, now teaching predominantly in the professional track of coursework.
