Mike Floyd is originally from Vail, Colorado, where he grew up in a skiing family. He spent his youth roaming around the Gore Range with summers spent canoeing in Ontario, Canada. An affinity for wilderness-based activities led Mike to teaching outdoor education.

Mike’s love for the mountains ties closely to his lifelong fascination with maps. He has worked as a ski patroller and avalanche technician at Vail, an avalanche and weather forecaster for the CAIC (Colorado Avalanche Information Center), and he operates a small cartography business. Mike is enthusiastic about technology, maps, and their influence on safety in avalanche terrain. Mike took his Pro Level II with AAI in 2020. This is his first season instructing for AAI.

When there’s no snow on the ground, Mike enjoys pedaling his bike and spending time outside with his family.
