Youth Avalanche Training
Ride Safe Avalanche Awareness
American Avalanche Institute, in conjunction with the Jackson Hole Ski Club, developed an avalanche education program for students over the Christmas holidays 6 years ago, with the support of the Bridger Teton National Forest, the Steve Romeo Memorial Fund, Teton County School District, and Snow King Resort.
This program is free to all who are interested, ages 10-18. Classes are 2 ½ – 3 hours long and are age group specific.
Middle School Avalanche Awareness
American Avalanche Institute, in conjunction with the Jackson Hole Middle School, developed an avalanche education program for middle school students 4 years ago, with the support of the Bridger Teton National Forest, the Steve Romeo Memorial Fund, Teton County School District, and Snow King Resort. Students currently receive 4, 2 hour activity-based classes after school and one full field day of instruction over a one month period.
High School Avalanche Awareness
American Avalanche Institute (AAI) in conjunction with the Jackson Hole High School, developed an avalanche education program for high school students 12 years ago. With the support of the Bridger Teton National Forest and the Steve Romeo Memorial Fund, as well as the Teton County School District, this program has expanded to reach hundreds of high school students each winter, both during school in science class, as well as in the field.
Students currently receive 10 days of avalanche awareness instruction in Physics class, and spend one day in the field. Students can elect to continue their education and do two more field days on the Bridger Teton National Forest with AAI and receive a Level 1 certificate.
