What is your home base?
Cooke City, Montana
What avalanche courses do you teach?
What is your favorite snow story?
Ole the dog of course. Long story, but a Welsh Corgi was buried in an Avalanche just south of Cooke City in 2012. It was buried for 4 days and dug himself out and walked back to Cooke City to the door of the motel where his people had been staying prior to the avalanche. I made a hack video documenting it 🙂
What was the path that led you to avalanche education?
I was fortunate to have some very good mentors who were in the industry as forecasters and guides from the beginning of my backcountry skiing career. I learned so much from them and from numerous memorable moments in the mountains relating to snow, that I felt sharing my experiences and educating others was something I wanted to do. When I started skiing in the backcountry it was trial by fire and there were not a lot of educational opportunities for recreational skiers. So when I founded BPG, I wanted to create a venue for backcountry skiing and ski mountaineering education in hopes of making people’s experiences in the mountains more enjoyable and safer.
What do you do with your offseason?
I am always building something or fixing something. I love construction and designing things almost as much as I like skiing powder.
